Napoleon at War: Marengo Setup and Essential Rules

The Marengo playthrough begins with the board set up, the essential rules on the table, and the scenario objectives in view.

This post accompanies my first episode in a physical-board playthrough of Napoleon at War from Decision Games. I am starting with the Marengo scenario and using this opening episode to establish the game system, the map, the major rules, and the situation before Turn 1.

Why play this one physically?

Most of my wargaming videos use VASSAL or another computer-based presentation. This time I am using the physical mounted maps because they are an important part of the Deluxe Edition and are not easy to reproduce accurately as a digital module. The physical board also makes the map's rivers, bridges, terrain, objectives, and counter density part of the story.

The Marengo situation

The scenario begins with the Austrians holding the initiative and the French facing restrictions during the opening turn. The Austrians must make progress toward their geographical objectives while avoiding a position that can be undone by the French reinforcements and later counterattack.

The scenario's tension comes from the change in balance over time. Early Austrian movement can create pressure, but the French position becomes more capable as reinforcements arrive and the counterattack option becomes available. The important question for Turn 1 is not simply how far the Austrians can advance; it is how they can cross the river system, pin French units, and preserve a useful position for the later battle.

Rules note

This is an initial rules overview rather than a final ruling on every edge case. Printed rules, my interpretation, and the actual play-through decision are separate layers. Any uncertain interpretation will be checked against the rulebook before it affects play.

Next episode

The next video will begin Turn 1. That is where the general rules become concrete: movement choices, river crossings, zones of control, mandatory attacks, and the first decisions of the Marengo battle.

Reader question: If you have played this system before, what do you consider the most important early Austrian decision in Marengo?
