Napoleon at War: Marengo Turn 1 — Austrian and French Turns
The first full turn of Marengo is underway. The Austrians have the opening move, but the French position and the river crossings make the first decisions more constrained than they may appear.
This post accompanies the first played turn in my physical-board series using Napoleon at War from Decision Games. The episode covers both the Austrian and French turns, including movement decisions, the first combat resolutions, and the developing position on the Marengo map.

Turn 1: the Austrian problem
The Austrian opening is shaped by the French deployment, mandatory attacks, and the limited ways to bring forces across the river system. The turn features a difficult set of movement and attack choices: concentrating several units on one target may force other adjacent enemies to be attacked as well, while crossing at a single bridge can restrict how quickly the rest of the force joins the action.
The video shows the Austrian player weighing those constraints, moving cavalry toward the French position, and resolving the first attacks. The commentary is an in-the-moment record of the decisions and rule considerations, rather than a claim that every option has been exhaustively analyzed.
The French response
The French turn follows the Austrian advance and the first combat results. The position remains fluid: units have been displaced or forced to react, while the broader scenario pressure from French reinforcements and the later counterattack still lies ahead. This episode ends after Turn 1; it does not resolve the battle or establish the final scenario outcome.
Rules and campaign note
This is a play-through record. Rules commentary reflects the presenter’s working interpretation during play; the rulebook remains authoritative, and any disputed or uncertain ruling should be checked before it is treated as final.
Next episode
The Marengo series continues with the Austrian portion of Turn 2, followed by the French response in its own episode.
Reader question: Which Turn 1 constraint would shape your Austrian plan most: mandatory combat, the bridge bottleneck, or the risk of overextending before the French response?
